amiibo figures not region locked

According to an IGN report, amiibo figures are not region locked. The site was able to register an American figure with a Japanese profile following yesterday’s Wii U firmware update. That’s certainly good news!

Amiibo Models Can Only Store Save Data For One Game At A Time, Read-Only Titles Unaffected

Nintendo has clarified details on amiibo save data restrictions following the announcement of 11 new NFC models scheduled for release next year. According to Nintendo of Japan’s official amiibo website, which verified Toon Link, Sheik and Zelda would be compatible with Hyrule Warriors, the figures will only be able to store one game’s save data at a time due to limited space. Ultimately, this means that players will be able to save data from Super Smash Bros, but will have to erase their data to use with another game which writes to the model.

However, this does not restrict read-only data, so players will still be able to use amiibo models with Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors to unlock Mii racer suits or new weapons without affecting the model’s save data. Given that Super Smash Bros is the only title that will read and write to the models currently, there’s no nightmare-inducing losses of save data. But when Nintendo chooses to release newer titles which both read and write data, players will have to exercise caution when using the same amiibo models between games.

“If you want to write the data of other read and write compatible software, please erase the data in the “amiibo setting” of Wii U.”

Miiverse Update Planned For Late November Will Make User Profiles Public

Nintendo are set to issue a new update later this month to its social network Miiverse – and it will make big changes to user profiles. Though members of the network are usually notified of the changes when the update is live, Miiverse’s Marty has given current users plenty of time to understand such changes.

In his message, which you can view here, Marty explains that all user profiles will be made public in the next update. Currently, users must sign in using their NNID to view other posters profiles, but when the update is issued sometime between mid-to-late November, non-Miiverse members will be able to see anyone’s profile – providing it’s set to “Everyone” in the privacy settings menu. If you do not wish your profile to be viewed by the public, you can change your settings accordingly via the user page.

October 2014 NPD: Nintendo’s response – Smash 3DS has sold 1 million units

Nintendo has issued a response to this month’s NPD report.

The highlight this month is Super Smash Bros. 3DS, which has sold 1.2 million combined physical and digital units. Thanks to a strong October, the game moved 485,000 copies and is the best-selling handheld title of the year. Smash Bros. 3DS is now the tenth 3DS game to sell at least one million units in the U.S.

Nintendo also mentioned Wii U in its statement. Thus far in 2014, hardware and software sales have increased by 47 percent and 84 percent respectively.

It’s official: Smash is a smash. Despite only being on the market for a little more than a month, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has already sold 1.2 million combined physical and digital units in the U.S alone. The game sold more than 485,000 total units in October to become the 10th Nintendo 3DS title to sell at least 1 million units in the U.S. The Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS game is the best-selling hand-held title so far in 2014, but will face a stiff challenge to hold onto that title when the next great Pokémon adventures – Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire – arrive on Nov. 21.

Wii U continues to have a very strong year. Through the first 10 months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by 47 percent and 84 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013. Those numbers are both poised to grow with the one-two punch of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and amiibo on Nov. 21, which are then quickly joined by Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Dec. 5.

The full list of million-plus sellers on Nintendo 3DS in the United States is as follows:

Title Total Units*
Mario Kart 7 3.62 million
Super Mario 3D Land 3.34 million
New Super Mario Bros. 2 2.33 million
Pokémon X 2.11 million
Pokémon Y 2.03 million
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D 1.41 million
Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon 1.36 million
Animal Crossing: New Leaf 1.42 million
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS 1.20 million
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds 1.06 million
*Nintendo 3DS software sales include both physical and digital sales, as well as software bundled with hardware.

**Data regarding physical sales of games in September are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.

Wii U Update Causes Crashing And WiFi Problems

Nintendo, in preparation for the launch of amiibo, released a firmware update for the Wii U to make it compatible. This update doesn't have any apparent upgrades, as the figures aren't out yet, but does seem to be causing issues. According to multiple users at Nintendo's Tech Forums, their Wii Us are experiencing minor problems such as higher load times to more pressing ones such as WiFi connectivity being killed off and system crashes. When contacting customer support, these consumers were told that they would have to send in their Wii U for repairs. This process could take upwards of four weeks, so it's understandable why some are upset. Especially with the release of Super Smash Bros., now's really not the time you want to find yourself Wii U-less. If you're prompted to update, ignore it until this issue gets straightened out.

As much as I like Nintendo, the same Mario and Zelda games are getting a little, boring.

Splatoon is definitely a step in the right direction IMO.

I'm hoping that they eventually revive series like F-zero and maybe begin work on some new ones.
