I got a New 3DS XL. Removing the back plate to swap the MicroSD was awful and the single worst experience I've had with a console. I finished my data transfer, then just had to swap the SD, so I was really worried that I couldn't complete it and would lose Ambassador status and 3 and a half years of StreetPass/download data. It took about half an hour of loosening the thing before I could finally lift it off with the stylus.
I know most people will only remove that plate once- and the battery is under there and you don't want it to get loose- so it doesn't have to be too easy to remove, but then there are people who use multiple SD cards or regular New owners who'll want to swap faceplates... I feel sorry for them and hope the faceplates are easier to remove than the XL's shell. Also, removing it shouldn't be so difficult when it's nessicary for changing storage and system transfer (unless you use the slooooowww wireless SD data transfer). I really think Nintendo should have spent time making the casing easier to remove.

Besides the incredibly frustrating setup, I love it. As a 3DS enthusiast, I think the design is perfect, looks-wise: it's reminiscent of the original XL with a shine and gloss that makes me nostalgic for the original, standard 3DS.

Also, maybe it's just because my console is new and the old one had a worn-out Circle Pad that would stick in certain directions, but the regular Circle Pad on this console seems fantastic. It glides a lot more smoothly than the previous ones.
As for the C-Stick: it's very stiff and sticks out quite a bit, yet it's fairly sensitive. I can't imagine this being able to be moved around smoothly, at all. I haven't gotten used to using it in Smash, because the small size is awkward to get used to, but I think it could be used very well. It seems you also have to be kinda precise due to the small size- at first, there were a couple times where I tried tapping it to the side and did an Up-Smash instead. For lefites, I don't think you could use this like a CPP for Kid Icarus. It's way too stiff and small to be used for character movement.

Also, yes, you can turn off the Super-Stable 3D and auto-brightness. I think they work fairly well, actually- but I'm used to having my 3DS stable, so the SS3D is actually a bit worse for me and the auto-brightness can be annoying. Stupidly, auto-brightness options are only on the Home Menu and SS3D options are only in the System Settings app :/

How does the 3d compare to the old Xl. I'm hoping to get a 3ds soon but will be determined on how the 3d differs

The Super Stable 3D is actually surprisingly good. I can't notice a difference with regular 3D. SS3D looks slightly more flat from the sides but I haven't had problems with it detecting me.
