Wii production in Japan will 'end soon'

Production of the Nintendo Wii console will "soon end," according to a post on Nintendo of Japan's website.

A notice posted to the official website states "manufacturing is scheduled to end soon" on the console, which launched worldwide in 2006.

A reconfigured, updated model of the Wii launched in 2011 with an additional black color scheme, while the scaled-down minimalistic Wii Mini hit select retailers in Canada late last year and Europe and U.K. this past spring. The console's successor, the Wii U, launched in November last year.

According to data tracking website Game Data Museum, the Wii has sold 12.7 million units in Japan since the console's launch, as well as more than 100 million units worldwide.

Polygon has reached out to Nintendo to ask if stopping production on the Wii in Japan means it will cease worldwide as well, and will share more details as we have them.

That's crazy! Considering Disney Infinity is available for Wii, people who don't have Wiis NOW in Japan can't get that game, unless they're getting the Wii DI, and playing it on a Wii U. I mean, it'll be weird for people in Japan to see some Wii games in stores, but not the actual system.

Yeah. But since there will be another Disney Infinity game (not confirmed yet or so), it most likely that that some Wii owners need to get the Wii U in order to play DI 2. Besides, Wii already sold a lot of consoles worldwide and now it's time for a new chapter with the Wii U.
