If I Were to get a standalone piece of the Lone Ranger PlaySet, would it be completely useless unless i got the figures, or could i use the playset in the toybox??

The playset cannot be used in the toybox so without the figures it is worthless.

The Lone Ranger Play Set can't be used in the Toy Box Mode unless you have the figures of Lone Ranger and Tonto in order for you to play the playset. So obviously, if you minus the characters or playset, it's pointless to play.
